چکیده

iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my advisors Dana Randall and Eric Vigoda for their guidance and support, which they gave generously. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with two of the leading researchers in my field. Dana never ceased to surprise me with her quick insights and ability to get to crux of a problem. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Eric and am always inspired by his persistent approach to solving hard problems. During my stay at Georgia Tech, I had the opportunity to interact with other faculty in theory group and the ACO program and I would like to thank them as well. I would like to thank Prasad Tetali especially, who is the nicest of people, and from whose methodical approach to research I learned a lot. I'd like to thank Vijay Vazirani for his timely advice as well as for some enjoyable discussions on problems. I'd like to thank Santosh Vempala for some fun discussions as well. Thanks to Ivona Bezáková, Juan Vera and Sam Greenberg for enjoyable discussions in the course of our collaborations. I'd like to thank all the friends I made at Georgia Tech; presence made the working environment at Tech very cordial and friendly. I would like to thank my family; my parents Rakesh and Nirupama, and my sister Melanie for their constant support and encouragement.

Controlling the Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance of Mild Steel by Intercritical Annealing and Subcritical Tempering

The effects of intercritical annealing and subcritical tempering on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of mild steel were studied. It was revealed that intercritical annealing followed by quenching resulted in the development of a ferritic-martensitic dual phase (DP) microstructure with high tensile strength, disappearance of the yield-point phenomenon, superior work-hardening b...

Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Related Topics

This article provides a brief review of recent developments in Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. The methods discussed include the standard Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, the Gibbs sampler, and various special cases of interest to practitioners. It also devotes a section on strategies for improving mixing rate of MCMC samplers, e.g., simulated tempering, parallel tempering, parameter expans...

Grain Refinement of Dual Phase Steel via Tempering of Cold-Rolled Martensite

A microstructure consisting of ultrafine grained (UFG) ferrite with average grain size of ~ 0.7 µm and dispersed nano-sized carbides was produced by cold-rolling and tempering of the martensite starting microstructure in a low carbon steel. Subsequently, fine grained dual phase (DP) steel consisting of equiaxed ferrite grains with average size of ~ 5 µm and martensite islands with average size ...

Sampling from multimodal distributions using tempered transitions

I present a new Markov chain sampling method appropriate for distributions with isolated modes. Like the recently-developed method of \simulated tempering", the \tempered transition" method uses a series of distributions that interpolate between the distribution of interest and a distribution for which sampling is easier. The new method has the advantage that it does not require approximate val...

Hybrid parallel tempering and simulated annealing method

In this paper, we propose a new hybrid scheme of parallel tempering and simulated annealing (hybrid PT/SA). Within the hybrid PT/SA scheme, a composite system with multiple conformations is evolving in parallel on a temperature ladder with various transition step sizes. The simulated annealing (SA) process uses a cooling scheme to decrease the temperature values in the temperature ladder to the...

Parallel Tempering in Rosetta Practice

Parallel Tempering (PT) is an effective algorithm to overcome the slow convergence in low-temperature protein simulation by initiating multiple systems to run at multiple temperature levels and randomly switch with neighbor temperature levels. We implemented the PT scheme in the Rosetta to explore the rough energy landscape in protein folding and to improve the success rate of Rosetta in topolo...
